2021 Scholarship Winner

All of this year’s Leukemia & Lymphoma Law School Scholarship Winners have courageously faced the challenges of cancer and plan to embark on careers in law.

SAN DIEGO, California, January 18, 2022 — Renkin & Associates, a family law firm based in San Diego, is pleased to announce the 2021 winners of its Leukemia & Lymphoma Law School Scholarship.

This scholarship supports young law students whose lives have been impacted by blood disorders such as leukemia and lymphoma. All applicants must be current or upcoming law students with at least a 3.0 GPA and be affected by issues related to lymphoma or leukemia (either personally or through a family member). Each year, the winning entrants receive $1,000 or $2,000 to help cover law school expenses.

The 2021 winners are:

  • Matthew M. Zancewicz, this year’s primary recipient, will receive $2,000 for his scholarship.  He is a student at Northeastern University School of Law.
  • Meagan E. Murray, who attends the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, will receive $1,000.
  • John William ‘Jack’ Sheridan, who attends Baylor Law, will receive $1,000.
  • Thomas E. Kiesel, who attends Rutgers Law School, will receive $1,000.

Each applicant must complete an essay detailing how cancer has affected their lives and their decision to become a lawyer. Matthew Zancewicz, this year’s $2,000 scholarship recipient, lost his father to leukemia the night before he began his junior year at the University of Connecticut.

“I stayed up all night thinking about dropping out of school or limping through the semester aiming to simply pass my classes at the bare minimum and nothing more,” he noted in his essay. Then he realized that his father would be prouder of him if he maintained his dream of going to law school.

“I ended that semester with a 3.90 GPA, and the next semester, I raised my GPA to a 4.0. My motivation and determination to become the best attorney that I can be has taught me to always seek out new, challenging opportunities, which is exactly why I am applying to law school. I am confident that this will carry over into my law classes and legal career, but my main goal remains intact: helping people. I will work all day and all night under any circumstances to achieve my goal of aiding those in need, particularly in the field of family law.”

In 2014, attorney Richard Renkin, a lymphoma survivor, established the Leukemia & Lymphoma Law School Scholarship to raise awareness for blood cancer research, changing the perception that cancer patients’ lives end with their diagnosis, and to provide financial assistance to aspiring law students.

Renkin & Associates is also proud to support Blood Cancer Awareness Month by raising awareness of the disease and helping to fund research that may one day lead to a cure. By encouraging students to tell their stories and share their goals for the future, Attorney Renkin and his team hope to inspire others living with curable blood cancers and encourage them to live their dreams.
