seasonal-workersIn tune with the gig economy’s birthing of “flexible work,” hourly and seasonal employees are now prioritizing flexible schedules, similar to the control offered by independent positions.

And with staff shortages during the busiest season for retail and warehousing companies, their desire for flexible holiday schedules may come to fruition.

Almost 60% of surveyed hourly employees weren’t confident that their employer would handle the holiday rush, and the retail industry expected to hire half a million temporary workers this winter

If seasonal retail and warehouse workers aren’t given the flexibility to be with their families and avoid burnout this holiday season, they could very well find another employer in dire need to fill a role.

Rather than suffering through staff shortages during peak season, flexible scheduling seems to be the answer–as it’s been in other industries that utilize office spaces. More and more companies are opting for a hybrid or remote work model to spend more time with family and avoid burnout, similarly to these seasonal retail and warehouse workers.

I touch on this in my book, The Workplace Transformed, in the chapter titled “Employee Engagement Challenges.” In a subsection called “Motivating Exhausted, Overworked Employees,” you’ll find that many workers aren’t looking for bonuses or perks to keep them around–rather, well-rounded benefits packages and flexible working arrangements are what’s desired, along with professional fulfillment.

As seasonal workers experience holiday rushes, be it the retail or warehousing industries, flexible scheduling will be integral to retainment

And with the high demands of the holidays, retainment is vital to avoiding bottlenecked business. For my recent updates on COVID-19 return-to-work policies, which affect remote models, visit my YouTube channel.
