Dream Big. Start Small. Act Now.

While Robin S. Sharma is credited as the first author of this quote, others like Simon Sinek have put their own spin on it.

I heard this quote again last month from Dr. Mohan Ananda at the Visionaries Roundtable Conference.  Mohan (the visionary behind GPS, who then founded and sold Stamps.com and many others!) was sharing his wisdom on taking companies from start-up to sale.  Mohan’s version is: Start small and dream big!

Mohan and Elene

To him, there are 3 ingredients for a successful business venture:

  • The Leader and Leadership Team – – this is the most valuable component, because without the right people you go nowhere. (Couldn’t agree more! Enerpace is all about driving business growth through leadership excellence!)
  • The Why/What/How – – What problem are you solving?  That’s your “Why”.  Your product or service is the “How”.
  • The Funding – – without capital, you also will go nowhere.

Mohan recommends drawing upon friends and family for funding initially, to create your Minimum Viable Product/Service.  It doesn’t need to have every feature at the start, but must be complete enough to solve a unique need so that you can land your first client.  Once you have that reference client, you can move up the funding ladder to Angel Investors, Venture Capital and so on.

It’s important to note that not every entrepreneur must be focused on the “scale & sell” model. Here are 7 other completely acceptable alternatives!

This was the second time I’ve had the opportunity to learn from Mohan.  It’s fascinating to see how a billionaire businessman thinks, how he selects the companies to invest in and vets which boards to serve on.  It’s rare to see such genius wrapped in humility, good humor, and a genuine desire to mentor others.

So, what’s YOUR big dream?  What’s one step you can take this week to move it forward?  It could be as simple as skipping Starbucks and putting that money into a separate “dream account”.  It could be a high-level outline of the book you want to write.  Or, dedicating 30 minutes each week to researching what’s next for you professionally.  Take that one step!

We’re often afraid to start because it seems impossible.  When someone is dissatisfied in their career, I take out my ‘magic wand’ and ask what dream job I should create for them.  I have worked with FIVE people who got that actual dream job!  It IS possible – but only if you “dream big”.  The Enerpace Team is here to help!
