To round out our Family Safety Blog Series, we wanted to end with one that focuses specifically on a very popular game with kids, Fortnite. As part of our effort to create a safer online environment for our three children, my wife and I knew we needed to address their favorite gaming platforms, including Fortnite. While the game is popular for its thrilling battles and team-based play, it also comes with risks like open voice chat, exposure to strangers, and in-game purchases. Managing these concerns through Fortnite Parental Safety became a priority as we worked to ensure our kids had a safe and enjoyable gaming experience.

Here’s how we configured Fortnite to protect our children while allowing them to play and interact with friends we personally approved.

Why Fortnite Needs Safety Controls

Fortnite is an interactive, multiplayer game, which means players can chat with strangers, join public matches, and make impulsive in-game purchases. These features, while fun, can expose children to inappropriate content, language, or interactions. To mitigate these risks, we needed to customize the game’s settings to strike the right balance between safety and fun with Fortnite parental safety settings.

Steps We Took to Secure Fortnite

1. Set Up Fortnite Parental Safety Controls

Epic Games provides robust parental controls directly in Fortnite. Here’s how we set it up:

  • Access Parental Controls:
  • From the main menu, navigate to Settings → Parental Controls and create a unique PIN to prevent unauthorized changes.
  • Restrict Mature Language:
  • Enabled the Mature Language Filter to block inappropriate text and chat content.
  • Monitor Gameplay:
  • We set restrictions on what content could be accessed, ensuring the game remained age appropriate.

2. Manage Voice and Text Chat

Fortnite’s social features are one of its highlights, but they can also pose risks. We tailored these settings for safety:

  • Voice Chat:
  • Disabled voice chat entirely for our younger children.
  • For our older child, we restricted voice chat to Friends Only and monitored their friend list.
  • Text Chat:
  • Turned off text chat to eliminate the possibility of harmful interactions with strangers.

3. Control Friend Requests

To ensure our children only interacted with people we knew, we limited their ability to add or be added by strangers:

  • Friend Request Approval:
  • Adjusted privacy settings to require Parental Approval for all friend requests.
  • Reviewed their existing friend list and removed unfamiliar names.

4. Limit In-Game Purchases

Fortnite’s in-game currency, V-Bucks, can lead to impulsive spending. We put safeguards in place to prevent unauthorized purchases:

  • Require Payment Approval:
  • Disabled automatic payment methods for in-game purchases.
  • Set up notifications on our own devices for purchase approval requests.
  • Educated Our Kids:
  • Talked to them about the importance of responsible spending and made them understand why approval was necessary.

5. Set Playtime Limits

To prevent excessive screen time and ensure a healthy balance, we implemented limits:

  • Daily Time Limits:
  • Used Xbox Family Settings and PlayStation Parental Controls to cap gameplay time.
  • Encouraged Breaks:
  • Introduced “tech-free” family times during meals and after dinner to promote offline bonding.

The Outcome: A Safe and Fun Fortnite Experience

After configuring these Fortnite Parental Safety settings, our kids could enjoy Fortnite safely and responsibly. They still had fun battling it out with their friends, but we no longer worried about inappropriate interactions or runaway purchases. Most importantly, they understood why these boundaries were in place and appreciated the effort we put into their safety.
