One of my clients came to me because her mentor had said for at least ten years, “One of these days I’m going to write a book.” He died unexpectedly, and you’ve probably already figured out he never did write that book.
She went on to share, “Because I’d give almost anything to have his words in my hands right now, I’m going to start now.”
One of the types of books I specialize in publishing is a legacy book. It’s a longer-form book that’s a combination memoir and manifesto—the story behind the author, the experience they bring to the table, and how they got to where they are now. Plus, the wisdom they want to share and leave behind.
For Trusted Advisors, that expertise is extremely valuable. It’s also irreplaceable. The processes you’ve developed and refined, the lessons learned along the way, your philosophy built on decades of experience—all of it can be captured for the benefit of those who follow in your footsteps.
Sure, some of it can be taught implicitly (and explicitly). It can be shared and passed down. But very often when we get to the meat of a client’s wisdom, they are so glad they made sure they got it done.
(Even if, especially if, the book is intended for their family and close friends alone.)
Now you—if you’re someone who has forged a path, blazed a trail, and are still leaving your legacy, it might be time for you to consider intentionally crafting your book with purpose.
It will preserve the wisdom only you can offer, in a form that outlasts everything else. Your family deserves to know all aspects of your story, and the people who come after you would love a roadmap only you can create.
