Many lawyers enter the profession believing that technical skill alone will carry them to long term success. They focus on mastering the law, building expertise, and delivering strong results for clients. While those elements are essential, they are only half the equation.

The other half is rarely discussed early enough.

Owili Eison, a Los Angeles based personal injury attorney and partner at BD&J, has built his career with a different mindset. From the beginning, he recognized that practicing law and building a business are two separate disciplines. Lawyers who understand both are the ones who create lasting success.

This distinction has become even more important as the legal industry continues to evolve.

There Are Two Sides To Every Legal Career

Every lawyer operates within two systems at the same time. The first is the practice of law itself, handling cases, advising clients, and delivering results. The second is the business of the firm, generating revenue, attracting clients, and sustaining growth.

Many attorneys focus almost entirely on the first and ignore the second.

That approach can work for a period of time, especially within structured environments like large firms. But it creates long term risk. Without the ability to generate business, lawyers remain dependent on external factors they cannot control.

Understanding both sides of the profession is what creates real career security.

Job Security Is An Illusion Without A Book Of Business

One of the most important lessons for lawyers is that stability is not guaranteed. Market conditions change, firms restructure, and opportunities shift quickly.

Lawyers who rely solely on their employer to provide work often find themselves exposed when those changes occur.

Owili took a different approach early in his career. Instead of assuming stability, he focused on building his own pipeline of clients and relationships. That mindset created flexibility and control, regardless of where he worked.

A personal book of business is not just about growth. It is about independence.

Networking Must Be Intentional To Work

Not all networking is productive. Attending events without a clear purpose often leads to surface level connections that never develop into meaningful opportunities.

Effective networking requires intention.

Lawyers must understand who they are trying to meet, why those relationships matter, and what value they can offer in return. The strongest referral networks are built on reciprocity, not one sided requests.

Over time, a small number of well developed relationships can produce significantly more business than a large number of casual connections.

Personal Branding Builds Trust At Scale

In today’s market, visibility matters. Potential clients and referral partners often research lawyers online before making a decision to connect or refer business.

A strong personal brand allows lawyers to build credibility before a conversation even begins.

Owili invested in consistent content, sharing insights, answering questions, and presenting himself authentically. Over time, that effort created a following and generated real opportunities.

The key is not perfection. It is consistency and authenticity.

Lawyers who show up regularly and provide value position themselves as trusted voices in their space.

Consistency Is What Separates Effort From Results

Many lawyers start business development initiatives but fail to maintain them. They post content for a few weeks, attend a handful of events, or reach out to a few contacts, then stop.

That inconsistency prevents momentum from building.

Sustained effort over time is what produces results. Relationships develop gradually. Visibility increases through repetition. Opportunities compound when actions are repeated consistently.

Short bursts of activity rarely lead to long term success. Consistency does.

Owili Eison’s Biggest Mistake

One of the most important lessons Owili shares is the tendency to wait too long before taking action.

Earlier in his career, there was a belief that decisions needed to be fully analyzed and risks minimized before moving forward. That approach created hesitation and delayed opportunities.

Over time, it became clear that waiting for perfect conditions often means missing the moment entirely.

Progress comes from taking action, even when all variables are not fully known. Small, calculated steps forward create clarity and momentum.

Perfection is not a requirement for growth. Action is.

Closing Thoughts

Success in the legal profession requires more than technical ability. It requires a willingness to think beyond the immediate work and focus on long term positioning.

Lawyers who treat their careers like a business, invest in relationships, and build their personal brand create opportunities that extend far beyond any single role or firm.

The path is not immediate. It takes time, consistency, and effort.

But for those who commit to it, the payoff is significant. More control, more flexibility, and a practice built on intention rather than circumstance.
